I really like the ideas behind Backdrop, largely because it embodies what I had hoped would happen with Drupal 8. Instead it feels like D8 went the exact opposite direction. I come from a design background and feel very comfortable building sites, and theming. I am also fairly comfortable hacking through things, but have come to grips with the fact that coding just isn't my thing anymore. I got started with Drupal 6 in beta and the move to D7 was rough, and D8 scares the heck out of me. Mostly because I fear I will be reduced to just site building. I also fear that the sites I have built in Drupal 7 will not have upgrade paths. My clients are small businesses, hiring someone to migrate them and start over isn't in most of their budgets. I fear some will have to go to Wordpress, which I despise, because I love what Drupal can do. I really like what I am reading about Backdrop, but knowing how slowly the modules tend to trickle in on new core versions, I am a bit fearful for its ability to reach mass.
