I'm strongly supportive of the Backdrop initiative. My experience as a consultant stretching back to the 1970's argues that the "best" software is that which is addressed to the market in which you are placed. The solution will evolve over time. That's both inevitable and desirable. How it evolves will depend on the current and expected users, and what they feel they will need. Drupal 8 is clearly aimed at the Big Boys&Girls. The abandonment of Drupal Gardens is indicative of the direction in which Drupal is moving. That may lead to a greater and more exciting and more powerful Drupal, but it's not likely to lead to a better fit for smaller organizations. My connection is now strictly as a volunteer (I'm well past retirement age). All of my sites are minor and address audiences that are modest in size. Backdrop seems a much better fit to the needs of my sites than does Drupal 8. Given the markets the solutions are intended to address, my bet is that Backdrop will continue to be a better fit. Thanks for your efforts, ... and let me know if I can help with the evolution of Backgrop
