Jen, thank you *so much* for this post. I am an old Drupalero. Been in Drupal for about a decade and generally loved it. D8 is too much for me. I think maybe its too much for the really smart people: so much overhead and abstraction. There's a reason D8 took so long to come out of the oven. I understand the value of abstraction, but at some point it's too much. I don't think the D8 back end code I've seen is "elegant", but then I don't do OO. I remeber at a DrupalCon (Barcelona?) where ChX was warning that he was an old procedural guy and didn't like OO. I don't either. Maybe D8 is the way forward for the "highly skilled Professionals", but there's a lot of us who've contributed who don't fit into that category (and don't want to). D8 is losing a whole mass of Drupal contributors who could pop the hood and tinker and fix (and occasionally break!) Drupal. I'm definitely looking at Backdrop and considering it for new clients who want long term support and can't afford the regular major upgrades from the highly skilled professionals. D8 is too much for me! I might be able to learn it, but I don't think I want to invest the time. Keep up the great work for the community!
