I disagree that "forking has never been the answer". I mean, it worked out pretty well for WordPress. ;) If the things we're worried about could be solved by adding a few more issues on Drupal.org and working through them, we wouldn't be here today. When the differences become differences in philosophy and focus, and groups of people are trying to steer the project in different directions, that's when a fork becomes necessary. I share your concerns about diving focus (I feel it personally with my desire to work on both Twig patches and Backdrop pull requests). Each person has only so much time. But I also know that there are core developers who have stepped down from working on Drupal 8. If they can be happy working on Backdrop instead, they are more than welcome. I expect the same will be true of contrib developers.

To post pieces of code, surround them with <code>...</code> tags. For PHP code, you can use <?php ... ?>, which will also color it based on syntax.
