Jen, you mention "scares the heck out of a lot of people". I honestly think that is unnecessary "scare" tactic from your side - it certainly scares you and some other people but you need to show data about how many people are actually worried about that otherwise it is used just as a negative anti-Drupal 8 marketing/tactic.

To post pieces of code, surround them with <code>...</code> tags. For PHP code, you can use <?php ... ?>, which will also color it based on syntax.
Web page addresses and email addresses turn into links automatically, unless the parent tag has the 'nolink' class.
Lines and paragraphs break automatically.
