The problem is branding: in creating "Backdrop", you're diluting "Drupal". Drupal versions naturally persist well beyond the release of their replacements; I can't see a reason to stop working on D7. Why not simply port Twig (and whatever else is worth keeping and can be unbolted) to D7, and keep that version active in parallel?
