Thanks for a great read Jen! Lots of food for thought. I'm certainly not against initiatives like Backdrop or small-core or Drupal-Lite... I'm just wondering did you consult with the Drupal core team? Were they against Backdrop? Did they decline to work with you? Or did you and quicksketch go it alone without asking whether collaboration might be possible? The other point I feel worth raising with any new Drupal core, be it D8 or Backdrop is described here: http://flink.com.au/ramblings/backdrop-proves-case-for-top-shelf-modules All the best with your brave move!
