"Let's make it easy to port contrib modules and themes from Drupal 7" -- If there's coder upgrade support for D7 to backdrop then that'd be a no brainer. If it's learning backdrop, a platform that will be hosted external to D.o, then porting modules to that and to D8 to hedge bets, I'm porting to D8. I may not be happy w/ having to learn all new stuff but thus is life. I wish you all the best but if it's not D7 compatible or nearly D7 compat OOTB there's really very little reason to migrate from D7 to Backdrop. As it were, there is going to be very little reason to migrate D7 to D8 for many years outside of the FUD stirred up by most "security" releases, many of which are easy to compensate for if the issue is documented.
