I am a big fan of Drupal, and have built 50 or so sites with Drupal 6 or Drupal 7. I am not yet very familiar with the changes that Drupal 8 will introduce, but the key for me is performance. On a regular Wamp setup on Windows (not fine-tuned, just a straight install), a clean Drupal 6 install loads in a few seconds. Drupal 7 is at best twice as slow (that is true on production sites too). Drupal 8 alpha 3 take one or several minutes to finish loading. Now, I know the wamp setup is not optimized at all, but these comparisons are made on the same machine with the same setup. If Backdrop addresses performance, I am all for it!
