It's true that complicated problems often have complicated solutions. However, there is often more than one solution to any given problem. It's important to weigh the costs and the benefits of each solution, and measure each proposal against the priorities of the project. Drupal 8 is shooting for an elegant OO architecture - and many of the reasons things are as complex as they are in Drupal 8 is because the solution they choose aligned with that goal. If Backdrop's goals are to change as little as possible from how things worked in Drupal 7, we'll almost certainly arrive at different solutions for the same problems - undoubtedly simpler ones. When the goals of different groups don't align, it's hard to agree on solutions. If my goals are different than those of the majority of core developers, it's pointless to keep trying to get them to choose my solutions. Perhaps it's time I worked on a project that had my goals in mind... Hence, the fork.
