Thanks for your comment Mark. It sounds like Drupal 8 is exactly the tool you've been waiting for :) You are not alone, and many people will agree with all the things you just stated. There are some of us, however, who disagree. For us, there is now Backdrop. These two differing opinions are what is driving the creation of two different projects, each with it's own goals in mind. I would like to address the issue about not having very many core committers. Drupal doesn't have enough core committers. Currently: there are 6: Dries, Gabor, Angie, David, Catch, and Alex. You don't see how a fork wouldn't hurt that, I don't see how it would -- unless one of those 6 people quits Drupal and starts working on Backdrop, agrees to our principals, and becomes a committer here instead. It's up to Drupal to decide to add more committers. The way I think Backdrop may be able to help that situation is by demonstrating how things could be managed with an army of our own.

To post pieces of code, surround them with <code>...</code> tags. For PHP code, you can use <?php ... ?>, which will also color it based on syntax.
Web page addresses and email addresses turn into links automatically, unless the parent tag has the 'nolink' class.
Lines and paragraphs break automatically.
