I've been using Drupal since around version 4.6 and it has come a long way, but the jump from version 6 to 7 was hard to make. The trouble I always had was helping people understand how to use and build with Drupal. Drupal 7 made it more complex as most people struggled to understand entities, features and theme changes. The talk of Drupal 8 actually made me start learning more about WordPress which has been good for me (to stretch my thinking), but I still rely on Drupal 7 for larger projects (colleges, businesses, non-profits, etc). This is why I am so excited about Backdrop. It feels like we can finally have a better foundation for end users and site builders. I do think it would be great to start with a new, responsive theme base. I envision using PureCSS.io as a starting point or Foundation 4. For designers and themers, it would be great if we could have a WordPress-level foundation to help others understand and adopt it. I am certainly open to helping out where I can.
