I'm a self-taught hack that got in at the end of Drupal 5, finally got comfortable with 6 and am just now feeling proficient with 7. I definitely appreciate the sentiment for improving upon D7 without a massive departure in coding, as I really don't have time to re-learn. It's a hobby for me on my personal site and a necessity for maintaining a test lab database system at work, so I'd certainly be exploring other options if I find D8 to be a bit much for me. I'm sure this was a difficult decision to arrive at and see the argument from both sides, but I think there would be quite a bit of demand for this fork and hope it won't be detrimental to D8.
